1987 Donruss – John Smoltz

Today I heard that the new card set by Topps was out. Of course I don’t actually collect cards anymore. At least not real cards. I just make fake cards using my pictures. As a child the set that really has always stuck in my mind as one that was hard to get was the 1987 Donruss set. I had a factory set of Fleer early in the year, and you could by a pack of Topps anywhere it seems like. I bought a lot of them too. Donruss though seemed to be very hard to get. My father bought me many packs to try and complete the set. We had a lot of fun putting the set together which we eventually did. For that reason this set will always have a special place for me. 1984 Topps – Brendan Ryan

This is one card that I really like. One reason is that I was able get the ‘stache that Brendan was rocking in 2009 onto a card. The other reason is that I loved how he wore his socks high, and even had the old school Cardinal socks on. Instead of using parts from the ’84 Topps card I just made this one from scratch. I think that I got the type close enough for what I am doing here. Brendan is no longer on the Cardinals so I thought I would make a couple cards of him using some pictures I had lying around. I always enjoyed watching him play. (more…)

1985 Topps – Ozzie Smith

The final five cards in this set features four Hall of Famers, and one that I wish would be. The first of those is Ozzie Smith. Growing up he was the man. He was an acrobatic shortstop known for his fielding more than his hitting. His home run in game five of the NLCS led to one of my favorite moments in baseball. Jack Buck’s famous call of “Go Crazy Folks, Go Crazy.” Since they are forever linked in my mind I thought that it would be cool to have them back to back on the site. (more…)

1985 Topps – Jack Buck

Jack was an institution in St. Louis. He did a lot of great things for baseball. I don’t know if his son Joe can be counted among those. I love how some of the older clubs had the announcers that became synonymous with the team. These guys were around for the majority of people’s lives. They were as much a part of the team as the ballpark. (more…)

1985 Topps – Bob Gibson

One of the most feared pitchers of the ’60’s was Bob Gibson. If you notice I didn’t even get too close to his statue. He even intimidates in bronze. He was a really great pitcher in an era dominated by great pitchers. That is saying something when you say that he is one of the greats. (more…)

1955 Bowman – Matt Holliday

I have always loved this set. I think I first saw pictures of it in the price guides I used to read as a kid. Then one issue they had a ’55 Bowman Mantle card that you could cut out to have. I was so excited that I had a card from the set. It didn’t matter that it was not real. I still have the card to this day. (more…)

1975 Topps – John Smoltz

When I was making the Pujols card I had the template open so I decided to make another card. I had some pictures of John Smoltz set aside to make cards of so I thought I would use on of them. I really like the 1975 Topps design. (I realize that I say that a lot. I apparently like many different card designs. The ones I don’t like so much probably won’t be on this site very much.) I knew that I wanted to make a few of these, and this was a good chance to make a couple. (more…)
