1990 Upper Deck – Carlos Quentin

This is where things start to get a bit harder. I have always loved watching Carlos play. No matter what his at bats are usually exciting. He doesn’t get cheated, and rarely watches a third strike. You get your money’s worth when he steps in. He may hit a towering home run, or just simply let a 95 mph fastball hit him in the chin. He was fun to watch, but if you want to watch him from now on you have to watch the Padres. We share the same birthday as well. It will be interesting to see what Carlos does in the National League. I have seen one of the pitchers that the Sox got in return when he was in Single A. Simon Castro was a beast for For Wayne of the Midwest League. Hopefully he can show that form in the bigs. (more…)

1987 Topps – Kyle Ryan

I only have a couple more of the cards that I made for the backs of my ’11 csd Custom set for the Midwest League opponents of the Silverhawks to go. Both cards are of West Michigan Whitecap players. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Zach Walters

The Silverhawks ended their season today with a win so I thought that the last card of the day should be of a Silverhawk player. Zach is a guy who started off strong. Sadly I moved before the end of the season so I really have lost touch with this team. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Jake Blackwood

Jake is yet another player that had a great game when I saw him play, and then went on to make the Midwest League All Star game. He came up just short of the cycle, and led Fort Wayne to the victory in game one of a doubleheader. He really had a great game, but could not back it up in the nightcap. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Rob Brantly

Here is yet another All Star Glossy card featuring a Midwest League All Star. I saw Rob play very early this season in South Bend. For some reason I have seen many West Michigan Whitecaps games. That day I added two more as rain allowed me to see a doubleheader. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Greg Rohan

Greg is a player who made the Midwest League All Star team this season during his second year with the Peoria Chiefs. I love how the Midwest League All Star logo looks on this card, and I wish that I had seen a few more teams play this season so that I could have expanded this set a bit. A move further away from the Silverhawks made that hard to do. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Yazy Arbelo

I sat down and tried to come up with a cool design for my all star cards this season. Last year I just stole from the ’76, ’85, and ’86 Topps all star designs. I was determined to make a design that was my own. What happened was that I came up with a couple designs that I really want to keep for future custom cards. I stumbled across some all star glossy cards from the 80’s, and knew that I had stumbled across something. Instead of coming up with a new card I could just put out a glossy set. I used one of those cards for a template, and put the ’11 All Star logo on the bottom with the new date at the top. I really liked how these turned out. I would like to make more of these for the Midwest League as well as making them for the American Association and the MLB All Star game. This little sub set could grow to be fairly large before I am done. (more…)

1985 Fleer – Yazy Arbelo

I have a class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks just a few miles away from my house. I attend a few South Bend Silverhawks games every year, and it is a given that they will have some cards on this site. In order to make my 2011 custom cards I had to make some cards for the back. I liked how the ’85 Fleer cards were looking so I decided that the Silverhawks would use that Yazy gets the first card because he has stood out the most to me this season. He was just named to the Midwest League All Star team as a reward for his efforts. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Kyle Gaedele (MLB Draft)

Kyle has had a few cards on this site already. It started off with him being the famous great nephew of Eddie Gaedel. After watching him a bit I knew that he would make the next step when it was time. He is only a junior, but when San Diego drafted him 203rd overall they might have just ended his career at Valpo. This is the second card already for Kyle in this set. If he ends up playing for the Fort Wayne Tincaps in the Midwest League I could possibly have three cards of him in the set. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Luis Sanz

Luis is the backup catcher for West Michigan. Minor League Monday will end with this backstops 2011 custom card. Part of the fun of seeing a doubleheader in the Midwest League is that you get to see many players all in one day. Normally I would have just seen the regular catcher for West Michigan Rob Brantly. Because of the back to back games I was able to see Luis play. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Emmanuel Quiles

Emmanuel is the backup catcher in Fort Wayne for the Tincaps. I was able to watch him a bit during both games at the Cove earlier this season. I don’t normally put the backup position players in this set. That is really true for the Midwest League. When it comes to catchers though the rules change a bit. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Jake Blackwood

Jake is a fine young player that had a great game when his team came into town. That does not guarantee future success, but it does put him on my radar. Before a team comes into South Bend I look up the prospects for the organization to see who I should watch for. Jake was not on any of those lists for Fort Wayne. In fact not one position player in the top 30 in the organization is currently on their roster. In warmups though I thought Jake looked like a ballplayer. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Billy Nowlin

I am still trying to figure out exactly how I am going to do this. For most of the Midwest League players I am going to have two cards of them to make one. Do I release both of them at the same time? I really only release minor league cards on Mondays so it will take a while to get them all out at this rate. That being said it is a long off season. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Don Kelly

Don is one of the few players that I have seen play at multiple levels. I saw him play for the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Midwest League. I then saw him play for the Toledo Mud Hens eight years later. Last year I saw him play for the Tigers in Detroit. The crazy thing is how long in between me seeing him in single A and triple A ball. He really has had a crazy career. (more…)

1986 Topps – Craig Cooper

Here is the second of two card I made of former Midwest League player Craig Cooper. After taking a few pictures of him at Notre Dame I found out that he had a very photogenic swing. It was a big swing that I saw again last year with Andruw Jones. I also wanted to make a couple cards of the old Fort Wayne Wizards. They have since changed their name to the Fort Wayne TinCaps. (more…)

1985 Donruss – Bobby Borchering

Bobby was drafted one spot ahead of A.J. Pollock who was the previous card on Midwest League Monday. He did not come to the Silverhawks right away because he was just out of high school. He is being brought up slowly. He was a highly touted prospect out of high school though, and has shown flashes of what they want out of him. He will be battling another third baseman, Matt Davidson, his entire way up though. That is a good problem for an organization to have though. (more…)

1985 Donruss – Giovanni Soto

Just like last season I thought that this year I would do a Midwest League Monday posting. That means that every card that I post today has to have a Midwest League player on it. I thought that I would start things off with an Indians prospect. Giovanni Soto came to the Indians system in the Johnny Peralta trade last season. I saw him play when the Lake County Captains team he was pitching for came to Coveleski Stadium to play the Silverhawks. His name intrigued me for one, and I was curious to see how good this young kid was. (more…)
