1985 Topps – Marcos Mateos

This is yet another card that was made for the sole purpose of being on the back of my 2011 custom card. I never made the regular card so this card for the back never was released. Marcos has a very cool delivery so I am sad that the card was never made. (more…)

Bronzed Heroes – Ernie Banks

Today is “Mr. Cub’s” 81st birthday. I thought that I would use that occasion to re-launch my Bronzed Heroes set. The premise of this set is easy. I have a lot of pictures of statues from various places that I have visited. I thought that they would look cool on a card, and even put some of the pictures on the ’85 Topps design that I used as my 2010 custom set. I thought that they would be good ‘short prints.’  (more…)

1991 Fleer – Tyler Colvin

This was a fun card to make. I really only owned a couple of the real cards, but for some reason I liked how this one turned out. Tyler is one of the players on the Cubs that I actually liked. I was sad to see him struck by the bat, and was actually rooting for him to get back to the form that I thought that he could show. The Cubs gave up on him though and sent him to Colorado. I hope that he can find some of that form again.  (more…)

1993 Donruss – Aramis Ramirez

I have had this card made for a while, but have not released it yet. Like most cards I make it came in a card making spurt, and if they don’t get posted right away I tend to forget about them. I want to post my new creations first. To me this card is cool because it represents the first year in many that I did not pick up any cards. I had so many other things going on that the hobby kind of fell away from me. I still don’t collect many actual cards, but getting to know the designs of the cards during the period that I did not collect (1993-2002) has actually been pretty fun. (more…)

1975 Topps – Starlin Castro

I have been missing from here for a couple of days. A new job has really had my attention lately. I thought that I would post a couple more of my ’75 Topps cards today to get things going again on the blog. The first is of Starlin Castro. He is still rough around the edges, but is a very good player. When he hits his stride I think that he will really be something else. I have made a few cards of the future star, and plan on making a few more. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Starlin Castro

I really don’t have near enough Cubs cards for the amount of pictures I have for the team. I am sure that this is something that will change over the winter. One player that I enjoy making cards of is Starlin Castro. He is really an up and comer that I think is just scratching the surface of what he can do. If that is true then Cubs fans have something special to watch over the next few years. (more…)

1983 Topps Super Veteran – Jamie Moyer

Jamie has been playing so long that he was actually almost able to have a card in the ’83 Topps set. Jamie is sitting out this season so I put his date on the card as 2010. He is recovering from surgery but would like to make a comeback next season. I really hope that he does. (more…)

2011 Gypsy Queen – Sammy Sosa

I thought I would try an older picture with this set. This picture was taken with a camera that was not that great. The picture looks a little weird, but it is not too far off. I thought that it would be interesting to see how the lower quality pictures did with this set. (more…)

1977 Topps – Ted Lilly

I was going to post this card yesterday, but I was very busy. I really forgot about posting on here until this morning. I thought it would have been neat to post a card of Ted on his return to Chicago, but it will have to be the day after. I like this ’77 Topps set. I am sure that plenty more of these will show up. (more…)

1977 Topps – Derrek Lee

Derrek makes the blog once again, but in a retro card as a member of the Cubs. I really like how the ’77 Topps set has held up, and I think that the Cubs card really looks good. I have made a couple, and plan to make many more from this set. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Ryan Dempster

Ryan is a player that everyone should like. He really has fun playing the game, and that is how it should be. Why can I not root for him then? I have some players on the Cubs that I don’t mind, but for some reason I can never root for Dempster. Maybe it is because he is a good player for the Cubs. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Mark Grace

Mark was a fan favorite of Cub fans for many years. He was a very good first baseman during a fairly successful run for the team. He finished his career in Arizona where he now works as a color man for their TV broadcasts. At first I tried to decide which team to make this card for. Mark is probably most well known for his time in Chicago, but he now works for Arizona. Since he was in Chicago at Wrigley singing the seventh inning stretch I chose the Cubs. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Darwin Barney

As I said in the earlier post Darwin was named the rookie of the month for the National League today so I thought that I should stop holding on to this card of Barney and post it. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Mike Quade

I have seen Mike manage on three different levels now. In the early 90’s I saw him when he brought his Rockford Expos to the Cove to play the team known then as the South Bend White Sox. In 2004 I attended a couple Iowa Cubs games that featured Mike as the manager. Finally this April I saw him manage the Cubs finally making it to the big leagues. He really seems like he knows baseball, and I hope that he gets a chance to show the fans what he knows. (more…)

1991 Fleer – Starlin Castro

Starlin is one of the young bright spots on the Cubs right now. He had a great debut that put huge expectations on him. He is still young though so he has some days that are not so great as well. Time will tell what kind of player he will end up being, but right now he looks like he will be very good. (more…)

1987 Fleer – Jeff Samardzija

It is weird how things turn out sometimes. Jeff played high school not too far away in Valpo. He played my Slicers in both football and baseball. He then went on to star at Notre Dame in football. He was arguably the third best pitcher on the Notre Dame pitching staff as well. He then signed a nice big contract to play baseball. He really has not found the success that many would have hoped he would have. He is in the bigs though, and that is much farther than most get. I have seen him pitch on multiple levels, and you have to root for the local kid. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Bob Dernier

While going through some pictures while the rain was coming down hard I found one I took earlier this season of Cubs coach Bob Dernier. Bob was a good outfielder for the team, and is now the first base coach for them. I decided that some teams had some very interesting coaches, and I could make the set a little more interesting if I included them in it. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Jeff Samardzija

As I alluded to earlier I made the 2011 card of Jeff Samardzija today. This is the first Cubs card for the 2011 set. I have included some of the changes that I decided on at the end of the preview process. I have changed the numbers so that they are outlined. I love how they look that way. The only problem with doing that was that it made the diamond that separated the name and position look odd. I just took that out. I like this card this way because it makes the number stand out a little more. (more…)

1985 Topps – Jeff Samardzija

I already had two cards from last years set with Jeff on them. I really faked an Iowa Cubs card, and I had a ‘short print’ Notre Dame card for him. I saw him pitch many times as a member of the Irish, and was lucky enough to finally see him pitch for the Cubs earlier this season. Since he picked up his first win of the season today I thought that I would post this card of him. Of course I could also be posting this so that I can post his 2011 csd Custom card. (more…)

1977 Topps – Starlin Castro

Starlin is one of the exciting young players right now. He really seems to have all the tools to be a great player. Living near Chicago it looks like I will get to watch two very good shortstops for a long time. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Geovany Soto

Geovany Soto played a bit for the 2007 Cubs, but it was his 2008 season that really endeared him to the fans. He had a great rookie year. Good enough to snag the National League Rookie of the Year award. He has struggled to find that form since, but is still a quality catcher. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Tyler Colvin

Tyler is a young Cub with a lot of promise. As a Sox fan I could not figure out last season why he was not getting more playing time. I know that I am not supposed to have favorite players on the Cubs, but I really enjoy watching Tyler play the game. Maybe he can fill in for Paulie once he retires. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Andrew Cashner

If I had not seen Andrew pitch Tuesday this card would probably have not been made. I had the backs for three more Cubs cards made, but was wondering if I should make the front for a couple of them. I liked the picture that was ready to go on the card, and seeing him in person made the card a reality. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Sean Marshall

Sean will be very important for the Cubs this season. They need some arms to get to Carlos Marmol, and Sean is a lefty that can fill that role. Sean is one of those players that is fun to photograph. He has a very nice pitching motion that looks good when photographed. (more…)
