1985 Fleer – Jason Varitek

With Tek retiring I thought that he deserved another day on this site. My favorite player was a catcher on the Red Sox, and ever since then I have taken a little notice of the other backstops in Boston. Rich Gedman was the one in the 80’s that caught my eye. For a long time now Jason Varitek has been the guy. I took this picture last August while Jason was catching against the White Sox. I was happy that he caught the Sunday game so that I could see him catch one last time. Varitek has really succeeded at every level that he has played. Look up his stats, and you will be impressed with how his teams have done over the years. Boston has a huge hole to fill.  (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Luis Allen

Luis is another Winnipeg Goldeye that I saw play in Gary earlier in the season. He was the catcher so it made sense that he would get a card in the set. I think that I have at least one catcher from every team that I have seen play this season (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Luis Sanz

Luis is the backup catcher for West Michigan. Minor League Monday will end with this backstops 2011 custom card. Part of the fun of seeing a doubleheader in the Midwest League is that you get to see many players all in one day. Normally I would have just seen the regular catcher for West Michigan Rob Brantly. Because of the back to back games I was able to see Luis play. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Joe Girardi

I still remember when Joe came up with the Cubs. It really does not seem like that long ago, but it actually has been. Since then he has had a good career followed up by a good managing career. He was so good that the Yankees made them their manager, and he has already brought them a World Series title. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Kevin Plawecki

Kevin had a very good freshman year for the Boilermakers last season. He is expected to do great things at Purdue. I had fun watching him last season before I knew anything about him. Looking at his name I would guess that he from Polish descent like myself. He also plays my favorite position so he has a lot going for him in my book. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Jorge Posada

Jorge has been the catcher for the Yankees for a while now. When you have thought of the Yankees catcher his name has been the first to come to mind for years now. That is what makes it so hard to believe that he is near the end of his career. Any talk of a catcher with a name other than Posada in New York just sounds strange. All good things must come to an end though, and soon enough Posada will join Dickey, Berra, and Munson as former Yankee greats. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Francisco Cervelli

I saw Cervelli last season when the Yankees were in Chicago. He is a talented young catcher that is sitting right now on the depth chart behind Russell Martin and Jorge Posada. The Yankees might have the most depth at catcher right now. With Posada aging Cervelli was scheduled to be the backup to Martin coming into the season. Of course things change quickly, and a foot injury has put Cervelli behind this spring. (more…)
