1990 Upper Deck – Chris Young

Chris is a player that I have followed for a while. He came up with the White Sox before being traded to the Diamondbacks. He had a good day on Opening Day yesterday for the D-Backs so I thought I would release this card of his that I made last season.  (more…)

1987 Fleer – Russell Branyan

Russell is slugger for sure. He is not in the game for his defense. He is in the game to hit the longball. I made this card last summer to go on the back of my 2011 custom card. Part of the tough part about that card was that I had to make cards for the back. It was a long process that in the end made the set fail. I loved how it looked, but it took way too much time to make.  (more…)

1987 Topps – Dan Haren

I like this set, and thanks to the snowpocolypse I have many of them sitting in a folder waiting to be showcased on this site. Dan is no longer with the Diamondbacks, but he was their ace for a few years. He was part of the draw when I went to see Arizona at Wrigley last season. He is now with the Angels so he has not changed colors too much. (more…)

1987 Fleer – Justin Upton

With the Sox playing at Arizona tonight I thought that I would release a couple cards of the D-Backs. Justin Upton is one of the players that I saw playing in A-ball for the local South Bend Silverhawks. He was the #1 pick of the 2006 draft so we knew that he had the potential to be very good. He has started to show that great potential in the Majors. (more…)

1987 Topps – Ryan Roberts

Ryan is a player that normally would not be on this site. I don’t know too much about him even though he is on the Diamondbacks. I saw him hit a home run live though so he will get this card as well as a card in the ’11 custom set. I love this ’87 Topps design so I have used it here and there for my cards that will go on the back of the custom set for this year. It is a simple design, but I think that it has held up well. (more…)

2011 csd All Star Glossy – Yazy Arbelo

I sat down and tried to come up with a cool design for my all star cards this season. Last year I just stole from the ’76, ’85, and ’86 Topps all star designs. I was determined to make a design that was my own. What happened was that I came up with a couple designs that I really want to keep for future custom cards. I stumbled across some all star glossy cards from the 80’s, and knew that I had stumbled across something. Instead of coming up with a new card I could just put out a glossy set. I used one of those cards for a template, and put the ’11 All Star logo on the bottom with the new date at the top. I really liked how these turned out. I would like to make more of these for the Midwest League as well as making them for the American Association and the MLB All Star game. This little sub set could grow to be fairly large before I am done. (more…)

1985 Fleer – Yazy Arbelo

I have a class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks just a few miles away from my house. I attend a few South Bend Silverhawks games every year, and it is a given that they will have some cards on this site. In order to make my 2011 custom cards I had to make some cards for the back. I liked how the ’85 Fleer cards were looking so I decided that the Silverhawks would use that Yazy gets the first card because he has stood out the most to me this season. He was just named to the Midwest League All Star team as a reward for his efforts. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Kelly Johnson

Kelly is another player that has been in both major sets I have made. His 2010 custom card which is on the back of this one shows just his back, but I like the picture of him finishing a pop up slide so I put the picture on the card. Kelly is part of a young core in Arizona that could make some noise in the not too distant future. (more…)

1987 Topps – Ryan Roberts

Ryan was probably not going to be in my 2011 csd Custom set. Then he hit a home run during the at bat pictured on this card while I saw him play live, and he worked his way into the set. As with all new players in the set I needed a card for the back of my custom so this card was born of necessity. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Chris Young

Chris was once a highly thought of prospect in the White Sox organization. He is now patrolling centerfield for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He seems to improve every year, and there is no telling how high his ceiling is. For a few years it would have been nice to see what he would have done in Chicago. For now though both teams are fine in center. (more…)

1987 Topps – Willie Bloomquist

Willie makes the set because of a good set of games against the Cubs. He hit a home run on Monday, and the next day knocked in the tying runs. That lead did not last though as the Cubs took the game. He was very good when I saw him play so he makes the set. That being said I needed a card for the back of my 2011 custom card so I made this ’87 Topps card to put there. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Mark Grace

Mark was a fan favorite of Cub fans for many years. He was a very good first baseman during a fairly successful run for the team. He finished his career in Arizona where he now works as a color man for their TV broadcasts. At first I tried to decide which team to make this card for. Mark is probably most well known for his time in Chicago, but he now works for Arizona. Since he was in Chicago at Wrigley singing the seventh inning stretch I chose the Cubs. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Henry Blanco

I posted my 1991 Fleer card of Henry a couple of days ago so that I could post this card of him. I watched him play for the Cubs for a while, and that fact alone gets him in this set. Henry has had a nice career as a backup catcher. You are playing the hardest position on the diamond, but then again you really aren’t playing it all that much. Not a bad gig. (more…)

1991 Fleer – Henry Blanco

Henry has had a very nice career as a backup catcher. For years he was the personal catcher for Greg Maddux. He is now the backup catcher for the Diamondbacks. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Xavier Nady

I was able to watch Xavier a bit last season when he was a member of the Cubs. He really seemed as if he was maybe playing past his time. The Cubs really didn’t have a spot for him except as a pinch hitter and an occasional defensive replacement. From what I saw in the outfield he should not be out there very often. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Bradin Hagens

The last card of Minor League Monday is the 2011 custom card of Bradin Hagens. Bradin was a member of the team last season so I thought I should get a card made of him right away. Bradin was a starter last season, but has worked out of the bullpen so far this season. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Kirk Gibson

Growing up in the 80’s when I did I had plenty of reasons to like Kirk as a player. He was a big part of the ’84 World Series team in Detroit, but he is probably best known for his dramatic game winning home run in 1998 for the Dodgers. He could barely walk, but came in and hit a home run. His run around the bases is still ingrained in my mind. This is another of the three cards I made while experimenting with the design of the card. Instead of going back and fixing my error I just went with the card. It is the weekend after all. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Alan Trammell

Alan was a great shortstop my entire childhood. He has had a couple of chances to manage, but has not found the same success that he did as a player. He is now part of the very good coaching staff in Arizona. Manager Kirk Gibson may not have the most experience managing, but he has surrounded himself with experience. Alan is just part of that equation. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Armando Galarraga

Last season Armando became a favorite player of mine when he was flat out robbed of a perfect game by umpire Jim Joyce. He handled the situation so well that I think most of the country enjoyed how well he handled the situation. For some reason he had trouble following that game, and was traded to Arizona in the off season. This card was part of a failed try at trying to keep the diamond in between the name and position. I only have two more of these, and I thought that I would be lazy and just post them instead of making new cards in their place. (more…)

1984 Topps – Justin Upton

This is yet another card that was made during the ‘snowpocolypse’ while I was snowed in. I was extremely bored so I went through some of my older pictures looking for cards. I loved the 1984 Topps set because it was the first card that I ever collected. The trouble was that I needed a close of up the head for the inset picture. I could only make cards of players that I have seen up close. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Justin Upton

Justin is another big leaguer that spent time in South Bend with the Silverhawks. He came to South Bend as a #1 pick, and had some heavy expectations on him. At first I didn’t think that he was all that great, but he quickly started to show exactly what he could do. He has shown flashes of that in the majors, but still has yet to play like I think he can. If he can do that he will be among the best. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Chris Young

Chris was once a young prospect in the White Sox organization. He was sent to Arizona as part of the Javier Vazquez deal. He has since blossomed into a very solid major leaguer. He is part of the young core of players in Arizona that they hope will bring the team back to the playoffs. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Stephen Drew

Stephen is slowly coming into his own. The last two seasons he has been improving a everyday infielder for the Diamondbacks. Before that he was known as the other Drew brother. He and his two brothers were all drafted in the first round of the MLB draft. They are the only trio of brothers to have accomplished this feat. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Gerardo Parra

Gerardo was one of those players that I have seen play locally in South Bend in single A, and then in the bigs. Some of them you really follow, and then some of them you have to check if you saw them play. Seeing so many players you tend to lose track of some. Parra is one of those. His name sounded familiar, but it took finding a signed card with him in a Silverhawk uniform to trigger my memory. (more…)
