1984 Topps – A.J. Pierzynski

I had made this card a long time ago with some other Sox players. This was the first card type that I owned. It has probably been said many times on here, but I picked up my first baseball card ever in a trade for a french fry. It was a battered ’84 Topps Vance Law. I still have that card somewhere, and for that reason I always will enjoy this set.  (more…)

1984 Topps – Kris Staats

I guess that today I will have a theme of former Slicers on the blog. I thought that since I created a new tab for former Slicers that I should add some cards to the list. I watched Kris as part of a record setting LaPorte Slicer offense in 2005. He then made his mark at Purdue as the holder on field goals. It was nice to see a local kid playing for my Boilers.  (more…)

1984 Topps – Joe Mauer

This is yet another card that has been sitting in a folder on my computer for a while. At one point I was not working, and the cards were being made at an incredible pace. This is one from that time period. I couldn’t possibly post them all so I decided to just slowly release them. When I stopped having the time to make them I should have just kept posting the cards, but for some reason I did not. Joe should not be one of my favorite players because he is a star for a rival team. For some reason though I really enjoy watching him play. This card has two pictures from two separate occasions that make it up. The main picture was taken as Joe was jogging out to the bullpen prior to a game against the White Sox in 2009. He didn’t look up so I had to make do with what I had. The inset picture is of him warming up in the Metrodome in 2008. I loved the old school Twins uniforms, but I didn’t know enough about photography yet to make the picture as sharp as it could have been. (more…)

1984 Topps – Curtis Painter

I know that Curtis already has a ’84 Topps card, but that was in a Colts uniform. I found this picture of him while making cards for Saturdays game so I thought that I would hold it for today when the former Boiler quarterback makes his first NFL start. (more…)

1984 Topps – Tom Zbikowski

Tom was an exciting player for the Irish. He was a very good safety who also had a knack for returning kicks. He just ran up the field which in the end all the good returners do. He is the last card in the countdown simply because I like it the best. (more…)

1984 Topps – Kory Sheets

I really enjoyed watching Kory during his time at Purdue. He provided many great memories during his four year run. This card keeps the countdown going a bit leading up to the 8:00 kickoff against Notre Dame. (more…)

1984 Topps – Jimmy Clausen

Here is the first Notre Dame card in the ’84 Topps format. I really like how the Notre Dame cards look. I may have to make a couple more with some pictures that I get tonight. I grew up a die hard Notre Dame fan before going to school at Purdue. That is what makes this game so special to me, and why I needed a countdown leading up to it. (more…)

1984 Topps – Curtis Painter

I thought that since I had made the template for the Boilers with the intention of making it easy to make cards for multiple teams that I should try it out. This card was a little easier to make than the Purdue card. I have an actual card from 1984 to use to pick out colors. If I had to make this card from scratch I certainly would not have chosen these colors. I like the set overall though so I will stay true to it when possible even if I don’t like the colors they chose then. I may have to make an alternate version of this card eventually though. (more…)

1984 Topps – Ralph Bolden

I thought that I would post a couple football cards on this last Sunday without football. I wanted to try and replicate the ’84 Topps set. Earlier on this site I just altered an existing card to save some time. The design is simple enough that I thought it wouldn’t take too much to do. The hardest part for me though was how to make the card a template that I could use to make other cards. Once I figures that out it was easy to make. Easy that is except for coming up with the Boilers colors. Black and Gold would be used, but where and what shades? I also was struggling with what color to use for the nameplate on the card. In ’84 that plate color had nothing to do with the team colors. Starting from scratch was a challenge, but I like the results. I am sure that a few more of these will show up throughout the season. (more…)

1984 Topps – Jeff Manship

While looking at some of the ’84 Topps cards that I had already made today I saw one of former Notre Dame hurler Jeff Manship. I have been meaning to release the card, but for some reason I never did. Last night he was part of a combined no-hitter for the Twins Triple A team in Rochester. He started the game, and it is great that he gets some publicity. Jeff was part of the great staff in 2006 for the Irish that also included Tom Thornton and Jeff Samardzija. (more…)
