1985 Donruss – Bobby Borchering
Bobby was drafted one spot ahead of A.J. Pollock who was the previous card on Midwest League Monday. He did not come to the Silverhawks right away because he was just out of high school. He is being brought up slowly. He was a highly touted prospect out of high school though, and has shown flashes of what they want out of him. He will be battling another third baseman, Matt Davidson, his entire way up though. That is a good problem for an organization to have though. (more…)
1985 Donruss – A.J. Pollock
A.J. was a star at Notre Dame. You might not have heard of him as much as you should of though because they school was still getting over the Jeff Samardzija days. He was a solid hitter that could really cover some ground in center. I enjoyed watching him at Notre Dame, and was thrilled to hear the Diamondbacks drafted him 17th because that meant I had a shot to watch him again with the Silverhawks. I saw him get a hit on the MLB Network with the big club yesterday, and it reminded me how high the ceiling really is for this kid. (more…)
1985 Donrus – Chad Jenkins
Midwest League Monday continues with another 1985 Donruss rated rookie card of Chad Jenkins. Chad was selected 20th overall in the 2009 draft. He played most of the season last year with the Lansing Lugnuts the low A ball affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. He was moved up at the end of the season after a good year that saw him on the Midwest League All Star team. (more…)
1985 Donruss – Chris Owings
Midwest League Monday continues with Chris Owings. Chris was the 41st overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. He played a very solid shortstop last year in South Bend. He is one of the up and coming prospects in baseball. He is listed on a couple of the top 100 lists that come out each year. (more…)
1985 Donruss – Giovanni Soto
Just like last season I thought that this year I would do a Midwest League Monday posting. That means that every card that I post today has to have a Midwest League player on it. I thought that I would start things off with an Indians prospect. Giovanni Soto came to the Indians system in the Johnny Peralta trade last season. I saw him play when the Lake County Captains team he was pitching for came to Coveleski Stadium to play the Silverhawks. His name intrigued me for one, and I was curious to see how good this young kid was. (more…)
1985 Donruss – Hak-Ju Lee
I thought I would try my hand at picking some prospects much like the companies did in the mid 80’s. Some players in the Rated Rookie group did very well, while others were never heard from again. I always liked the rated rookie cards so it wouldn’t surprise me to see a few of them end up on this site. The first is of a player that I saw play this past summer. Hak-Ju Lee is an up and coming shortstop in the Rays organization. His skills are supposedly better than the current shortstop Starlin Castro. If that is the case he will be a good one. He was traded to the Rays this past off season in the Matt Garza deal. I guess the Cubs are feeling good about Castro to trade away one of their best prospects. (more…)
1988 Donruss – Tyler Flowers
I wanted to do a few things with the rookies on the Sox last year. I made some older cards featuring two players, and I also wanted to try my hand at a rated rookie. What better player to try that on than Tyler? Tyler has had an up and down career so far. After being traded from the Braves he tore up the Arizona Fall League. He did the same in the minors the next season. Last year he had an off year at Triple A. He was once thought to be the heir apparent to A.J. Pierzynski at catcher, but doubts have started to creep in. This will be an important year for Tyler as a member of the White Sox. (more…)
