Oakland Athletics

1986 Topps – Kurt Suzuki

This is a card that I have had made for a long time. There have been cards just sitting in a folder waiting to be made with little hope of getting published. These A’s cards were in a folder because I was going to release them with the 2011 csd custom cards that I was making. When my interest in making the cards died so did the cards that were going to end up on the backs. It is now time to release some of these cards so that they can finally leave the folder.  (more…)

1984 Fleer – Hideki Matsui

In early 2011 I attended a game at the Cell between the White Sox and the Oakland A’s. I had some nice sunny conditions to get some shots so I made a few cards from them. Here is one of the 1984 Fleer tribute cards that I made. I always liked this design, and for some reason I have always liked the way that the A’s players looked on the cards. While I am cleaning out all of the older cards of mine I thought that I would start with some of these ’84 Fleer A’s cards that I made. They were made with the intention of putting them on the backs of my 2011 Custom Set which was never really finished. I think that I made way too big of a workload for myself on that one. I was very interested that day to see the former Yankees star in an A’s uniform. The season before I had pictures of him playing for the Angels, and I thought that it would be great to see him on a card in a different uniform.

1984 Fleer – Kurt Suzuki

Kurt is a player that I have followed for a while now. I watched him on television when his Cal State Fullerton team made its run in 2004. I was in Omaha watching the day that they won the College World Series against Texas. For some reason this catcher made me take notice. If you have read this blog you know that the catcher is by far my favorite position. Kurt is one of the current crop of catchers that I enjoy watching. I took this picture early last season as he was warming up before facing the White Sox. (more…)

1985 Topps Famous Lineage – Joel Skinner

Joel was part of the actual Father-Son subset in 1985. He was a member of the Sox then so of course I have a few of them. He is now the bench coach for the Oakland Athletics. I thought that it would be cool to make this card just to see how things have changed in the last 26 years. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Hideki Matsui

Matsui made last year’s set as a member of the Angels. I thought that it was a cool card because it was the first time I had seen the slugger since he was a member of the Yankees. This year he is on yet another team. I really like how the Athletics colors translate to the card. In my opinion these are some of the sharper cards in this set. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – David DeJesus

Some players you just picture on a certain team. It doesn’t matter if they played on other squads you just think of one team when you hear their name. When I hear the name David DeJesus I immediately think of the Royals. Of course he now plays for the Athletics. He was traded this past off season, but in my mind he will always be a Royal. I may have just beaten that fact into the ground. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Bob Geren

Part of the nature of being a Major League Manager is that you never know when your time will be up. In early April I saw the A’s play and Bob Geren was their manager. They start a four game series in Chicago less than two months later with a new manager. Things change very quickly as you can see. (more…)

1984 Fleer – David DeJesus

After a outage last night prevented me from posting any cards we are back in action today. The first card is of Oakland’s new outfielder David DeJesus. As with a few players so far I had to make this card before I could make the 2011 custom card. For some reason I really thought that the A’s team should be on the ’84 Fleer card. Don’t ask me why, but I just thought that they fit. (more…)

1984 Fleer – Conor Jackson

I am really getting into a pattern here putting the cards that I made for the back of my 2011 customs on the site early in the day, and then putting the customs themselves on at night. Maybe I like the custom cards a little more. Some of these ’84 Fleer cards will look better on the back of my card then they do by themselves. This card is alright, but it lacks action. In that respect it is a good copy of the early 80’s cards. (more…)

1984 Fleer – Kevin Kouzmanoff

Part of the fun of making this years set has been designing cards for the backs of my 2011 customs. If I made a card with the player on it in the past it will go on the custom. If not I have to make one up for the player. I have complained about making these cards, but it has been fun to recreate some of the cards of the past with teams other than the White Sox on them. For some reason I knew the A’s had to be on the ’84 Fleer card. I don’t know why, but I just thought they should be on this card. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Andy LaRoche

Andy makes my custom set for the first time. Last year I had his brother in the set along with a special card for Adam and their father. Andy is a solid ballplayer that I wanted to get in this set. With my seats right by the pregame warmup area for the A’s I had a lot of good pictures that will result in the A’s getting a few cards in the set. (more…)

1984 Fleer – Andy LaRoche

Andy has already been featured on this blog with a Famous Lineage card. His brother and father were also in last years set. With all of that on his side Andy had to be in this years custom set. In order to do that though I had to make a custom card for the back. I don’t know if I knew exactly what I was getting into when I started this. If I go to as many games this year as last year things will get very busy around here. (more…)

1984 Fleer – Cliff Pennington

Early on in my preview set I made the decision to use my own cards on the back of this year’s custom set. I was sick of looking up cards of players, and thought it would make things easier. It also would be a chance to show off some of my past cards. I must have been tired that night because I never factored new players into that equation. I figures the new players would be in A ball or college where cards of them would be hard to find anyway. One way that I made my job easier in making the cards for the back was to just make as many as I could at once with the same template. In the case of the A’s I made them with my new ’84 Fleer template. The other one was kind of rough so I decided to try it again. Early on this year I was back to making ’85 Topps cards for the backs. I made them last year for the entire set so I wanted to try something different. I may jump around a bit and try out new sets knowing that I am using the cards on the back of another. (more…)

2011 csd Custom – Joel Skinner

Earlier this season Joel Skinner came back to Chicago as the bench coach for the Oakland A’s. He came up in the mid 80’s and was supposed to be the replacement for the aging Carlton Fisk. Of course we all know that Carlton played almost ten more years after that so Joel had to look for playing time elsewhere. (more…)

1985 Topps Famous Lineage – Andy Laroche

Last year as part of my 2010 custom set I made some cards that I called Famous Lineage that showed current ballplayers and their famous relatives. Now that that set is over I have updated the card, and will continue to show the ways the current generation of players relates to the past. (more…)

1984 Ralston Purina – Kurt Suzuki

As I have stated on this blog before Kurt has been a favorite of mine since the 2004 College World Series. He was really fun to watch as his team marched towards the title. I happened to be there the day his Cal State Fullerton team clinched it with a win against Texas. That was the only day I could attend the series, but it turned out to be a very good one. (more…)

1963 Topps – Kurt Suzuki

One of the only good things that came out of me going to the Sox game on Wednesday was being able to see Kurt Suzuki play again. In 2004 I watched his Cal State Fullerton team march through the College World Series. I was actually at the game when they clinched it against Texas. It was hard to cheer that day since I was right in the middle of the Texas families. It is hard to root against a team when you are sitting amongst the parents. It just seems too rude. I was glad to see Fullerton win though. Kurt went on to win the Johnny Bench Award for the nation’s top collegiate catcher that year. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Gio Gonzalez

Gio has seen a few teams in his short career. He came to the White Sox as part of the Freddy Gacia deal. He was then sent to Oakland when the Sox aquired Nick Swisher. He has since found a spot in their rotation, and is a solid pitcher. He also has a very good rapport with the fans from the limited experience I have had with him. (more…)

2011 csd Preview – Mark Ellis

Mark became an Athletic in 2001 when he came over from the Royals with Johnny Damon. He has since locked down the second base position. Last season he was healthy and came up just a little shy of batting .300. (more…)

1988 Donruss – Scott Hairston

The son of former Sox player Jerry Hairston makes the set with a 1988 Donruss card. I have already included his brother Jerry with a 1988 Score card, and have an idea to get both brothers on a card. I have to work on that though. I was upset earlier in the year when I did not get a good picture of him when the Cubs were playing his team in Chicago. He was traded to the A’s, and I was able to get this picture in September of 2009. (more…)
