1985 Topps 25th Anniversary – Minnie Minoso

Yesterday the White Sox website had a great article on Minnie. I knew most of what was in the article because he was my father’s favorite player. He is still mad about the 1951 Rookie of the Year voting 60 years later. He has a clipping showing the stats of both Minnie, and Gil McDougald who won the award. Minnie beat him in every category besides home runs and playing in New York. Minnie was the first African American to play for the Sox, but has become much more than that over the years. He is still with the team as a goodwill ambassador, and is a very nice guy. I thought it would be great to release the special card I made of him after reading the article. Bill James the renowned stat guru had Minnie as the 10th best left fielder of all time when everything is considered. Reading that you wonder how he never got close to the Hall of Fame. You need 75% to get in, and Minnie never received better than 21.9 percent of the vote. Open your eyes voters! There has to be a way to get him in the hall. (more…)

1985 Topps – Ron Kittle (25th Anniversary Edition)

Here is the second card in the special subsetĀ  I created. As I said in an earlier post I wanted to make a set that commemorated the 25th anniversary of my first ballgame. I will always remember the original 1985 Topps card of Ron Kittle because the picture was taken at night. For some reason I always liked the card, and I eventually figures out that the way the lights bounced off his helmet looked pretty cool. That is one of my favorite cards from my childhood. (more…)

1985 Topps – Mark Buehrle (25th Anniversary Edition)

I was thinking about what a great year last season was for me watching baseball. It was the 25th anniversary of my first baseball game. I went to a lot of games, and filled most of my wishlist for the season. I even went to three Sox games in five days around my birthday. That just happened to coincide with the date of my first game. I thought that I would make a small subset to commemorate that great weekend last season. I remade the Sox template a little from 1985. It is close enough to 1985 that I will file it under that year, but I made a few changes. I replaced the Sox logo with the patch that the team wore that season. I also narrowed the borders a bit, and it is amazing how much it changed the card. I like how it looked so I kept the change. I plan on making 25 of these cards for a small subset. This is the first of those cards. (more…)
