Part of the fun of freeing myself from having to use my own pictures on certain cards is the fact that I can go back and make cards that should have been made. Carlton Fisk signed with the White Sox in March of 1981 so the card companies did not have the proper time to make a White Sox card of the catcher. All three companies featured him as a member of the Red Sox in their 1981 base sets. Topps gave Carlton a White Sox card with their traded set, but the other two companies were probably more worried about year two of their brand than updating cards at the time. 1981 Donruss – Jim Thome

Today I am going to do something different. I am going to post a Donruss card from every year in the eighties. If the mood strikes me right I may keep going a little. For now though let’s start with the card that started it all.In 1981 Donruss started coming out with cards. Along with Fleer they really started a competition for the fans money. The initial design was pretty simple, but I think it has held up over the years. (more…)


1981 Donruss – A.J. Pierzynski

I thought I would keep up the trend of new cards with this one of A.J. I had not even thought about doing a 1981 Donruss card until last night. As I was watching MLB Network I was thinking about how these cards were made 30 years ago. I thought that I would give it a try. After having some success cropping around the White Sox name on the ’78 Topps card I thought that this wouldn’t be too bad. The only thing that I don’t like about the design is my logo in the corner. I wanted to stay with the script look that I have been using, but it doesn’t seem to fit the card. (more…)
