1976 Topps – Joe Mauer

76 topps joe mauerThis is another card that has been sitting in a folder for a while. For some reason I just hang on to certain cards. I was very big on finding cards to put onto this blog, and I was using pictures that I should not have been using to do that. This one of Joe Mauer is a good example. I really until last season did not have the equipment to get shots good enough inside of stadiums. That didn’t stop me from trying though as some of the shots would turn out. This one of Joe is a bit soft, but it is a good reminder of the game I saw him play in the final season of the Metrodome in 2008.  (more…)

1986 Topps – Gary Carter Tribute (1975-1978)

This morning I woke up to hear the news that Gary Carter had passed. As a kid that grew up in the 80’s and followed catchers Gary was a fun player to watch. Sometimes I didn’t give him the credit he deserved because that would have taken some away from my favorite player Carlton Fisk. I practiced all of the catcher drills that Gary showed me on a Mickey Mantle instructional video as a kid. The only problem was that I was left handed and would never play catcher. I was sad to hear of his passing so I thought that I could start a tribute set for Gary much like the one that I created for Carlton a few months ago. (more…)

1986 Topps – Carlton Fisk Tribute (1976-1979)

Just before I quite making cards I had this great idea to make a set much like the one that Topps did for Pete Rose in 1986. They took all of his cards and put the in sets of four to have a career spanning set. This is the second card of that set spanning the years 1976-1979. From here I have some decisions to make concerning the cards. If I don’t put any of the special cards or all star cards on the cards it will work out very nice. In my opinion though those cards are very important. I want to place them on the cards as well. I also toyed with the idea of adding Fleer and Donruss into the mix initially, and then Upper Deck and the others later. Of course things would get very confusing late when all the companies jumped into the mix. For now I think that I will keep things to just Topps. Later I might add some cards with just Donruss or just Fleer. I will at least make the next card in this set before deciding how to proceed.  (more…)

1976 Topps – Paul Konerko

I really wanted to make this card of Paulie. 1976 is his birth year, and I loved the card that Steve at White Sox Cards made for him. I couldn’t find a template to make though. Then it dawned on me that the obvious template was Steve’s Konerko card. I stole the image from his site, and cropped the card to put my picture on it. Paulie hit a two run dinger in the first inning tonight to give the Sox a 3-0 lead in the first so I thought now was the time to put this card out. (more…)

1976 Topps – Mike Aviles

This is a card that I made a while ago, but for some reason it has just sat in a file. As I have said many times on this blog I had some great seats last July for a game with the Royals and the White Sox. I took way too many pictures that day so it is only natural that some of them would end up on some cards. (more…)

1976 Topps – Chris Getz

I love this design for the 1976 Topps cards. The only problem is that each position needs a different template. The set does come from my birth year though so I will probably find a way to make a few more. (more…)

1976 Topps – R.A. Dickey

I saw R.A. Dickey pitch in 2009 when we were in Minnesota as part of our summer baseball trip. I have always enjoyed watching the knuckleballer work. I have been able to see a few over the years, and I was happy to see that Dickey was brought into the game in 2009 so that I could watch another one work. (more…)

1976 Topps – Corky Miller

Corky will always be an interesting player to me because I saw him play for three different teams in one season. In 2009 he started the season with the White Sox. He was traded to the Reds for Norris Hopper. I then saw him play for both the Lousiville Bats (against the Sox farm team the Charlotte Knights), and the Reds. I have seen a few players on three or more teams, but never in the same season. (more…)

1976 Topps – A.J. Pierzynski

This is the first 1976 Topps card that I have made. This set is much like the 1973 set in the fact that you have to have a template for each position because of the small drawing on each card. This makes mass production very hard. I like the look of the card though so I may give a few more a shot. Making this process a little easier is the site Project Baseball 1976. He has a great database of high resolution cards on his site. While I was looking for the cards I was stuck reading the great writeups he has for each card. Be prepared to spend some time there. Another reason to make more of these cards is the fact that this is my birth year. That just so happens to be the same year that A.J. was born so this is a good first card for the set. (more…)
