1951 Topps – Gordon Beckham

Until yesterday I had never heard of the 1951 Topps set. While searching through the Sports Card Blogroll I saw a card of Willie Mays on Cards That Never Were. Of course the card was fake, but the set was not. I don’t know how I have collected cards for almost thirty years without hearing about this set. It was a two series set of 52 cards each. I am glad that I saw the post because I love how the card looks. As soon as I saw it I knew that I had to try my hand at one. Since Gordon was the first custom card that I made I thought he should be the test subject for the card.

I took the picture on this card Sunday as Gordon was having some fun with Frank Thomas before the game. Frank was getting an escort around the field in a beautiful old car, and Gordon faked throwing a baseball at him. The picture above is of Gordon smiling at Frank as the Big Hurt told him to throw it. I was close enough to Gordon to have a pretty high res shot that would fit on the card nicely. This is my first card from this set, and I don’t think it will be the last.
